Two Walnut Valley Students Recognized by Board of Trustees
Champion speller and exceptional woodworker honored
WALNUT, CA--The Walnut Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees recognized two students with Board Awards during the meeting held on March 16.
Suzanne Middle School 8th grade student Tin Kuo was honored for winning the fourth annual Inland Valley Spelling Bee competition held February 26 at Mt. San Antonio College.
During the Board Meeting he even spelled “ p-a-l-a-d-i-n”, the word that won him the title in the 25th round of competition. 31 students vied in the four-hour event sponsored by the Friends of the Diamond Bar Library. Kuo will travel with an all –expense paid trip to Washington D.C. in May for the national competition.
Diamond Bar High School senior John Caldwell received recognition for his exceptional work in the Advanced Woodshop class, including a glossy hand-crafted guitar. The R.O.P. class taught by Mike Bromberg offers career opportunities to students.
Caldwell also brought in another guitar he is building to show the detailed stages these projects go through from beginning to completion.
Another outstanding class project was on display outside the District Office building during the meeting. A replica of a 1955 Benroy Teardrop camping trailer was built by scratch by woodshop students.
The immaculate trailer with detailed cabinetry and red sidewalls featured a 12-volt DC electrical system, 110-volt AC electrical system, interior lighting, custom galley, custom mattress, and more. Bromberg said the cozy trailer that is only 8’ x 10’ in size, will actually sleep two people! An inside cabinet door featured an identification plaque and autograph by every student that worked on the project.
