Walnut High Business Students Earn 2nd Place Sweepstakes Award
23 members qualify for State Competition
Walnut, CA-- The Walnut High School FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) club won the 2nd place Sweepstakes Award (for overall points) at the 2011 Gold Coast Section Conference. Over 1,200 students competed at West Ranch High School in Ventura on March 5.
“We’re getting closer to the 1st Place award, said advisor Neil Jacoby.
For the past 20 years, Moorpark High School has won the coveted top award. Walnut’s 2nd Place finish this year was only 27 points away. In past years, the team’s closest finish was over 100 points away.
“Maybe next year will be our year!” he added.
The sweepstakes award goes to the team whose members accumulate the most points on individual competitions across dozens of business curriculum categories.
89 students representing the 174-member business club competed in two ways- some took college level exams, while others competed in performance events. Students were also able to attend business workshops. After the competition, the team changed into their casual attire and enjoyed the rides at Six Flags Magic Mountain until the awards ceremony began at 6 p.m. in the Golden Bear Theater in the theme park.
17 students won 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place awards, in categories ranging from Public Speaking and Marketing, to Cyber Security and Hospitality Management. Walnut students earned a total of 51 awards in the top 10 of their events,
23 members have now qualified for the 2011 State Leadership Conference (SLC) on April 14-17 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Santa Clara.
Top winners with 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place awards include Avika Dua, Leon Ho, Albert Lin, Ashley Soong, Daniel Chen, Jonathan Lin, Jaimee Lin, Joanne Yeh, Stephany Yong, Allan Peng, Roger Liang, Kevin Dhali, Parth Visrodia, and Erika Ingram.
The Gold Coast Section consists primarily of high schools in Ventura, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties. Walnut joined the region three years ago.
