Eight Students from Walnut High School Named as

National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Students Recognized for Exceptional Academic Ability

WALNUT, CA — Walnut Valley Unified School District (WVUSD) announced that eight students from Walnut High School were recently named as National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. The National Merit Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous academic studies.

Penny Bian, Justin Cheng, Surya D. Donath, Ted H. Hong, David H. Kang, Barron P. Lee, Andrew Z. Lin, and Anson Lin were chosen from among the 16,000 high school students representing less than 1% of U.S. seniors.

These academically talented Walnut High School seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 6,870 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million that will be offered next spring.

The eight students were among the more than 1.3 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools who entered the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.
