WVUSD Board of Trustees Recognizes Star Students and

Parent Volunteers at November Meeting

Students Malia Clyde, Austin Le and Four Community Partners

Recognized for Contributions to WVUSD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WALNUT, CA — The Walnut Valley Unified School District (WVUSD) Board of Trustees (Board) recognized two outstanding students and four community partners from Collegewood Elementary School (Collegewood E.S.) and Chaparral Middle School (Chaparral M.S.) respectively, during the November 20 meeting.

From Collegewood E.S. in Walnut, Malia Clyde received the Super Star Student Award from Principal Rochelle Wolf. Malia has shown outstanding resilience and dedication, overcoming challenges with grace and determination. Academically, she sets high standards for herself, working hard and continually growing through her efforts. In addition to excelling in the classroom, Malia brings her energy and talents to a wide range of activities. She’s an accomplished athlete, competing in track for West Covina, playing soccer, swimming, and participating in club volleyball. She’s also looking forward to the track meet season and is always ready to push her athletic skills further.

Malia’s interests go beyond sports. She enjoys helping her grandparents — supporting her grandpa in Hawaii and walking her grandma's dog, showing the same kindness and responsibility at home as she does at school. At Collegewood, she has a special role as a TK buddy, sharing her love of reading and spending quality time with younger students. She keeps her love for movement and rhythm strong by participating in dance camp.

Wolf said, “Malia’s kindness, determination, and enthusiasm for life make her a true role model. She is truly a shining example of what a Collegewood Cougar should be.”

Katie Daher, Lisa Longoria, and Pei-Ju Huang-Tsai received the Partner in Education distinction from Collegewood E.S.

Katie Daher, Community Club President, has served for a total of nine years and led as president for the last three. During Wolf’s first year as principal, Daher went the extra mile, staying on an additional year to ensure a smooth transition. Daher has also served on the Coordinating Council, using her voice to support students.

Pei-Ju Huang-Tsai has been volunteering for eight years, creating the school’s yearbook and capturing countless memories on campus. The yearbook is a very time-consuming task, and she pours her heart into it. She organizes all the school’s dinner fundraisers and is always present, preserving the moments that make school life special.

Lisa Longoria is the quiet, unsung hero. She has been volunteering at Collegewood E.S. since 2011. Longoria started as a room mom, but now is there from start to finish at every event, supporting every step of the way. She does so without seeking recognition, yet her commitment is vital to the students’ and school’s success.

Wolf added, “It is truly an honor to name Mrs. Daher, Mrs. Huang-Tsai, and Mrs. Longoria as our stellar Partners in Education. Their dedication and hard work inspire all of us, and our school community is better because of them. We are grateful for everything they do.”

From Chaparral M.S. eighth-grade student Austin Le was honored with the Super Star Student recognition. As a member of the Design Based Learning (DBL) program, Austin demonstrates exceptional skills in the classroom with all his academic subjects, but his problem-solving skills go far beyond the walls of his classrooms. Austin co-leads and is passionate about the 3D printing club. Under his leadership, the club does not just printing 3D art. Austin identifies and solves school wide issues with the help of his 3D printers.

Chaparral M.S. Principal Robby Jung, EdD, explained, “Austin is so deserving of this award. He is the perfect representative for a student who excels both in and out of the classroom. It’s a pleasure to have him in our school.”

Mona Hwang, Community Club President at Chaparral M.S. received the Partner in Education award. Mona has led the efforts at Chaparral to fundraise for the benefit of all students. Her heart for doing this has translated into record-breaking fundraising numbers (breaking her own previous records), resulting in improved classroom technology, teacher mini-grants, transportation for fields trips, and athletics.

Jung added, “Mona’s steady leadership at the helm of the Community Club has allowed this group to thrive and be the supportive parent community that Chaparral is known to have. We are grateful for Mona’s commitment to the Chaparral Cougars and honored to give her this award.”
