Walnut Valley Schools Begin Classes

Walnut, CA-- Fifteen campuses opened classroom doors to over 15,700 students on August 22 in the Walnut Valley Unified School District.

At Quail Summit Elementary in Diamond Bar, students lined up with their parents before the bell rang signaling the beginning of the 2011-12 school year.  Then they followed teachers to their classrooms, found their desks, tucked backpacks away, and stacked bags and boxes of donated classroom supplies. Then students got right down to the business of learning!

As first grade teacher Mrs. Sally Kim spoke to parents about volunteering, student pick up and drop off rules, and other school business, students took out crayons and began coloring an August calendar. Parents had a job too –filling storage bags with supplies for their child’s desks before saying goodbye for the day.

Across town in Walnut, Suzanne Middle School computer teacher Connie Castro began the first day of her milestone 40th year as educator in the District.  She proudly calls herself a Walnut Valley “lifer” and our students have benefitted from four decades of her extraordinary dedication.

"My goal is the same every year. I'm always looking for new ways to integrate new technology.  Technology is always changing and it is transforming the world."

And if she ever won the lottery she would write a big check to be able to give her students the "latest and greatest!" she said.

Alinah Liu was busy taking on the first assignment of the day while her Dad filled a supply bag for her desk.

Ethan Ro gave the “OK” signal standing with his parents next to the Quail Summit entrance before his first day of kindergarten. “It’s going to be a good year!” he said.

A moment to remember! Kindergarten student Julia Schlachter began her very first day of school posing for a photo for her Mom.
