DIAMOND BAR, CA – The Walnut Valley Unified School District proudly celebrated its 26th annual “A Class Act” Cornerstone Awards Banquet on February 13, 2025, recognizing twelve exceptional classified employees who go above and beyond in their roles. The evening, hosted by Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Dr. Diane Perez and Director of Human Resources Dr. Seth Bond, highlighted the invaluable contributions of the district’s classified staff.
“Throughout the district, 750 classified employees make a difference in students' daily lives,” said Bond. “From providing nutritious meals to maintaining safe campuses, these individuals ensure that students are supported both in and out of the classroom.”
The Cornerstone Award, established in 1999 by the Personnel Commission, recognizes classified employees for their dedication to students, teachers, and schools. Each honoree received an engraved award, gift certificates, and special recognition from local officials and district leaders.
Meet the 2024 Cornerstone Award Honorees:
- January – Cecille-Hernandez Ortiz, School Administrative Assistant, Collegewood Elementary. Recognized for her warmth, organization, and commitment to student well-being.
- February – Melinda Snook, Instructional Aide III – Special Education, Chaparral Middle School. Celebrated for her leadership, humor, and unwavering support for all students.
- March – Monica Ya-Lun Liu, Instructional Aide II Bilingual/Bicultural, Walnut Elementary. Honored for her dedication to multilingual students and strong community engagement.
- April – Stephanie Castanon, Instructional Aide II, Maple Hill Elementary. Acknowledged for fostering a welcoming environment and supporting student leadership.
- May – Izena Valenzuela, Nutrition Services Worker III, Collegewood Elementary. Commended for ensuring students receive nutritious meals with encouragement and care.
- June – Judy Mayekawa, Instructional Aide II – Special Education, Suzanne Middle School. Recognized for her advocacy and compassionate support of students.
- July – Teresa Burton, Accounting Assistant II, Diamond Bar High School. Praised for her meticulous work in financial operations and dedication to student programs.
- August – Rebecca Martinez, Campus Security, Walnut High School. Honored for her commitment to student safety and campus well-being.
- September – Tommy Rojas, Lead Custodian, Quail Summit Elementary. Recognized for maintaining a clean, welcoming environment for students and staff.
- October – Sarah Kim, Health Clerk, Westhoff Elementary. Commended for her care and compassion in supporting student health.
- November – James “Jim” Cortez, Maintenance Specialist, District Office. Acknowledged for his expertise and dedication in keeping district facilities in top condition.
- December – Elena Lopez, Administrative Secretary, Ron Hockwalt Academies. Celebrated for her exceptional organizational skills and support of students and staff.
A Special Recognition
The evening concluded with the highly anticipated announcement of the 2024 Classified Employee of the Year. To resounding applause, Teresa Burton of Diamond Bar High School was named the honoree for her unwavering dedication and outstanding service.
“Teresa’s proactive approach allows Diamond Bar High School’s programs to thrive,” said her colleagues. “Her attention to detail and deep empathy create an environment where students and staff can succeed.”
A Night of Appreciation
Superintendent Dr. Robert Taylor expressed his gratitude for the district’s classified employees. “Tonight, we celebrate the individuals who are the backbone of our schools. Their hard work and commitment ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn and thrive.”
As the evening concluded, attendees left inspired by the dedication of the honorees, reaffirming that the classified employees of Walnut Valley truly are the foundation of the district’s success.
