Collegewood Hosts Grand Slam Opening Day Ceremony

WALNUT, CA—Collegewood Elementary School students and staff gathered for the first official spirit day assembly of the 2010-12 school year.

Students wore their spirit day t-shirts and carried baseball flags at the Opening Day rally held August 26.

Each classroom has been assigned a major league baseball team at the Walnut school.

“The baseball theme shows our students that we are all part of a team working together,” said Carolyn Wills, the school’s new principal.

We'll be using this for playground behavior, and as an aid to developing personal and social skills, and to reinforce character traits, she said.

Collegewood Elementary students, staff, and parents demonstrate each day that “Good Character is a HIT’!” she said.

The campus adopted the school wide program about a decade ago, said fifth grade teacher Lori Huckler.  “It unites us.”

She led the annual ceremony as the “official baseball commissioner”.  And as she introduced each class, students waved their official team flags and cheered during the spirit competition.

First grade teacher Jane Dyer-Smith said school spirit was “sky high” when students saw the school’s Cougar mascot make his first appearance at an opening day ceremony.

Principal Wills threw the first pitch to 4th grade student Koa Matton signaling the official opening of the new school year.
