Middle Schools Vie at MATHCOUNTS Competition
WALNUT, CA—Congratulations to all three Walnut Valley middle schools who competed and took home awards in the MATHCOUNTS East San Gabriel Valley Chapter competition held Saturday, February 25.
A total of 24 teams vied at the event held at Cal Poly Pomona University. MATHCOUNTS is a national program designed to challenge and promote interest in math and science for middle school students.
Currently in its 29th year, MATHCOUNTS is one of the country's largest and most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students.
Chaparral Middle School won the 4th Place award and one individual student from qualified to move to the California State Competition on March 17 at UC Irvine. 7th grader Benjamin Chen, for the 2nd year in a row, garnered the highest individual score of all the competitors. And this year, he achieved a perfect score!
The Chaparral team members are Benjamin Chen, Kathy Tong, William Dai, and Jonathan Sun. Individual Competitors are Yunxuan Li, Lauren Hyun, Justin Chuang, Eric Chen, Michelle Yi, and William He. Chaparral advisors are teachers Kit Lee and Jim Chung.
The Suzanne Middle School team brought home 1st, 2nd, 3rd place individual trophies, and a 5th place team trophy from the competition. Congratulations to 7th Graders: Mike Bao (3rd place individual overall), Vivian Lo, Ayesha Ng, Stephanie Djajadi. 8th Graders: Lynne Ji (1st place countdown round, 2nd place individual overall), William Widjaja, Jai Chen Jiang, Michael Hermanto, Christopher Wang, Federico Wang, Freya Zhu, Jessica Wei, Kyle Trieu, Cindy Lo. The Suzanne advisor is teacher Amy Erickson.
The South Pointe Middle School took the 6th Place award. Team members are Peyrin Kao, Leslie Sim , Alex Xie, and Jimmy Zheng. Individual competitors are Irene Chang, Jonathan Kuo , Sabrina Tseng , Henry Wang; and Alternates Sue Park and Aileen Han.
Alex Xie took 16th Place in the individual competition. South Pointe coaches are teachers Gary Dresser, Annie Kim, and Deanna Moreno.
