Walnut High FBLA Takes Sweepstakes Award
Team Qualifies for State Competition
WALNUT, CA—Walnut High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) won the 1st Place Sweepstakes Award at the 2012 Gold Coast Section Conference held March 3.
The WHS victory broke Moorpark High School’s 20- year streak as the top chapter in the section.
Walnut pushed ahead of Moorpark by 87 points to win the prestigious award.
A record 111 Walnut High team members vied against 20 schools including the formidable chapters from Arcadia and Gabrielino High Schools in the largest state conference to date.
The team is advised by teachers Neil Jacoby and Jerry Dutton.
“Neil has been working with the kids outside of the school day to prepare and support them for the event and it paid off! Great work“ congratulated Principal Jeff Jordan.
“Our students knocked them off and took the 1st place award,” said Jacoby.
The competition was held at West Ranch High School in Stevenson Ranch.
FBLA Club members competed in a wide range of business-related events including Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Personal Finance, Public Speaking, and Healthcare Administration.
The following students earned 1st place honors: Victor Chen, Accounting I; Barbara Gasgonia, Business Math; Ashley Lee, FBLA Principles and Procedures; Mira Chiu, Health Care Administration; Zachary Woo, Introduction to Business; Danna Chen, Introduction to Business Communication; Jeffrey Chen, Job Interview; and Minesh Patel, Public Speaking I.
The Walnut team is now preparing to compete among over 40 qualifying schools for the California State Leadership Conference on April 19-22 at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine.
