Chaparral students and staff volunteer at local shelter

DIAMOND BAR, CA-- The Chaparral Middle School's HUMANitarian Club recently had the opportunity to learn about the complex issue of homelessness.

Every year the club collects lunch donations from their fellow Cougars.

On March 5 they delivered about 200 sack lunches and then served dinner at a local shelter.

The winter shelter is sponsored by the East San Gabriel Valley Coalition for the Homeless.

The Coalition provides over 200 men, women, and children with a warm bed, three meals, hygiene kits, and many other opportunities to meet basic needs.

The non-profit organization works with public agencies, private organizations, foundations, and interfaith groups in the community to serve the needs of the homeless and those at risk of homelessness.

The students were able to talk with the participants before dinner service.

One student commented, "Wow, some of the homeless people are my age!"

It was a very enlightening experience for the Chaparral youth, said advisor Sherry Robertson.
