WHS Students Receive Writing Awards
WALNUT, CA--Fifty Walnut High School newspaper and yearbook students competed at the Regional Write-Off Competition sponsored by the Eastern Los Angeles Journalism Association.
Publications advisor Rebecca Chai said editors and staff vied in about ten events at the event held March 17 at Alhambra High School.
Walnut won 27 coveted writing awards.
“This is the largest group I've taken to competition in five years and the result of the competition would have been very different if even one of the students did not compete,” she said.
Walnut students took first place in News writing, Feature writing, Editorial Cartooning, and News Photography.
“Our greatest achievement was sweeping the Feature section with 1st Place Reetika Singh, 2nd Place Jessica You, and 3rd Place Angelina Tang,” Chai said.
This was Singh’s second win in this section. She is a current editor-in-chief for our newspaper and news site, Chai said.
When the competition began at 10 a.m. students got an introduction and instructions for each event by a proctor.
Then students began the timed competitions. The writers were given around an hour to write full-length articles. The designers are given around two hours to build yearbook and newspaper layouts. The photographers are given an hour and a half to go around campus to shoot photos of the event and other events happening around campus.
Congratulations to the following winners: Leon Ho, Michael Aie, Ashley Xu, Samantha Gomes – Novice News; Joyce Lam, Andrew Koo, Leonie Phoa – Newspaper Layout; Justin Kang, Kevin Yim, Eunice Pang – News Photography; Amy Lee, Michelle Kim – Editorial Cartooning; Patrick Lee, Susan Lin, Elliot Park – Critical Review; Nathan Au-Yeung – Sports; Reetika Singh, Jessica You, Angelina Tang, Michael Hyun – Feature; Frank Lin – News.
