Evergreen’s Family Event is a ‘Great Night to Read’
Students perform surprise flash mob dance!
DIAMOND BAR, CA--It was a good, good night as Evergreen Elementary families gathered in the amphitheater for an evening together.
During the Family Literacy Night held on May 2, they dined picnic-style on blankets spread on the grass, listened to their children read, and enjoyed entertainment provided by the school band and kindergarteners.
Parent Claire Ou enjoyed a delicious dinner from one of the gourmet food trucks at the school while eagerly awaiting to see her son Hans perform with the kindergarteners.
Third grader Noor Bokobaigoy and sister kindergartner Minna enjoyed snuggling up with their mother Dalia while reading the books they brought.
Fourth grade friends Johnny Yang, Jacob Pisetsky, and Kyle Zhang said they liked the food and reading best.
“This is great!” said Jacob’s mother Jessica.
First grader Matthew Yeung got a chance to practice reading the Magic School Bus Fights Germs.
“This event let’s us know what’s going on in the school and we’ve enjoyed the family time together,” said Matthew’s mother Andrea Lim.
Students also planned a special surprise for their families at the end of the event held from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Throughout the evening, the excited youngsters kept their “big secret” about performing first ever school-wide flash mob dance.
“The best part about tonight is the surprise flash mob performance!” exclaimed 5th grader flutist Karen Liu who brought Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger to read.
At Principal Dr. Don Trimmer’s signal, they all grabbed their books and gathered together to perform the choreographed song and dance It’s Going to Be a Great Night to Read – a revised version of the popular Black-Eyed Peas song I Gotta Feeling.
The 500 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade sang “It’s going to be a good book to read! I’ve got my book, do you have yours?”
Event organizer 4th grade teacher Lily Chang said the Family Literacy Night provided a fun way for families to be together and celebrate reading at the same time.
Students practiced the flash mob dance every day the week prior to the event.
“They just loved it! “ she said.
