Walnut Valley Mathletes Earn Gold Medals

WALNUT, CA— Five teams representing the Walnut Valley Unified School District competed and won medals in the 2012 Los Angeles County Math Fair on June 2.

Suzanne Middle School 8th grade team members Kykle Trieu, Christopher Wang, Winnie Wang, and Jessica Wei all earned Gold Medals.

Suzanne’s seventh grade team with members Mike Bao, Stephanie Djajadi, Vivian Lo, and Ayesha Ng also earned Gold Medals.

The school’s 6th grade team with members Eugene Lo, Angela Wang, Christopher Wong, and Adam Ng earned Silver Medals.

The fifth grade team with members Ethan Lin (Collegewood), Sylvester Yue (Westhoff), Alice Zhang (C.J. Morris) and Richard Zhao (C.J. Morris) earned Gold and Bronze medals.

Fourth grade team with members John Chou (Westhoff), Katherine Lee (Vejar), William Lin (Westoff) and Andrew Robison (C.J. Morris) earned Bronze Medals.

Congratulations to all of our students - we are very proud of you!” said Suzanne teachers and math coaches Amy Erickson and Larry Pinto.

Erickson and Pinto worked with about 40 incoming 4th and 5th grade students and their parents during four mathlete workshops held in May. Then they selected teams for the L.A. County Fair competition.

The students from Collegewood, C.J. Morris, Westhoff, and Vejar Elementary Schools made new friends and hopefully will join MATHCOUTNS clubs at their schools in the fall, Pinto said.
