Diamond Bar High Teacher Named County’s Best

WALNUT, CA—Sandy Davis, an English teacher and Peer Counseling advisor, was recognized as a 2012-13 Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year on Friday, September 21.

The Los Angeles County of Education announced the 16 educators who represent the professions “best of the best” in the largest honors competition for K-12 educators in the state during a ceremony held at the Universal City Hilton in Los Angeles.

Davis is a veteran teacher with 25 years of experience and has taught at Diamond Bar High for the past decade.

“I sincerely feel it is a privilege to be a brief part of my students’ journey to self discovery. For me there can be no greater professional accomplishment than to have made a meaningful difference in my students’ lives, especially empowering them to strive to be their best selves,” she said.

The annual event that aims to spotlight excellence in teaching and recognize highly effective and dedicated K-12 public school teachers.

The “Sweet 16” honorees were selected from a field of 71 Los Angeles County District Teachers of the Year. Candidates were required to do interviews and submit essays, lesson plans and other materials to judging panels comprised of educator peers.

The winners will serve as the standard-bearers for the county's 76,000-member public teaching corps for this academic year. Each honoree has recently won the Teacher of the Year title for his or her respective district.

The 16 L.A. County winners will automatically advance with other county titlists from around the state to the California Teachers of the Year competition this fall, with a chance to compete in the National Teacher of the Year contest next spring.
