Debbie Dobson waved to the crowd from the back of the bright red fire truck. Dodson is well known for her work with the local schools, Scouts and sports teams.

She seems to be everywhere in Walnut, which is why the local woman was named the city's community hero at the Los Angeles County Fair, where she rode in the parade. Dodson will also serve as the grand marshal in the parade at the upcoming Walnut Family Festival.

"I nominated Debbie because she's truly dedicated to our children and community," said City Council Member Nancy Tragarz. "Debbie was always willing to help out." As their children grew up together, Tragarz watched her friend serve in many local groups and organizations for the past 25 years.

"I was fortunate enough to stay at home to raise my kids, so I wanted to help our community," Dobson explained. The 53-year-old served as president and vice president of the community clubs at Collegewood Elementary and Suzanne Middle School while her three kids attended Walnut Valley Unified.

"I have also volunteered with the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts," Dobson added. "I've been involved in Scouting for many years."

Tragarz notes that Dobson was a Girl Scout leader for 12 years and a Cub Scout/Boy Scout leader for more than 14 years.

As the Dobson children's interests expanded, so did their mother's efforts. Soon she was serving as team mom for soccer and baseball teams.

"My sons played Pony baseball as well as club soccer, so I helped their teams coordinate their games and schedules," Dobson said. She also worked with the Mustangs cross-country, water polo and track and field teams.

"My daughter performed in plays at Walnut High. Their drama department is very professional, so I helped with the productions," the superworker noted. In between, Dobson found time to teach vacation Bible school and volunteer at the Relay For Life with the American Cancer Society.

Still, the tireless worker said she was "surprised" when she got the letter telling her she was Walnut's Community Hero. Dobson was looking forward to riding in the big parade at the Los Angeles County Fair.

"I can't believe it, the years go by so fast. I love giving back to the kids and know they've learned something," Dobson said.
