2012 ALL-AREA TEAMS

2012 All-Area Girls Golf Team: Diamond Bar's Bethany Wu tops Whittier Daily News picks

Player of the Year: BETHANY WU, Diamond Bar, Soph.

Bethany Wu had no expectations for competing in the CIF-Southern Section finals.

Heck, the Diamond Bar High School sophomore did not even realize she was competing in the top event in the CIF-SS until after she arrived at Western Hills Country Club in Chino Hills.

Yet, her 3-under-par 69, one of only two golfers to break par, won the 18-hole tournament.

"Actually, I did not know I was playing for it that day," Wu said. "I thought it was just the qualifier for the next stage (of CIF-SS competition). So I didn't really know. But right before I teed off, I found out when coach (Tony McCabe) told me."

Wu won by two strokes on the par-72 course.

"It was a really nice day, but the course was pretty hard," she said.

"That's why I can see why there were all of the high scores."

McCabe said the course had just had work completed on its greens and was set up more like for a professional tournament, not a high school tourney.

A week later, Wu finished tied for seventh in the CIF State-WSCGA Foundation Southern California finals.

She also helped the Brahmas to the CIF-SS Eastern title. That sent Diamond Bar to the CIF-SS qualifier, where the Brahmas finished second and the CIF State-WSCGA team competition. The Brahmas played second, 19 points behind winner Torrey Pines. Wu tied for third-low medalist in the CIF-SS team competition with a 68. She shot an even-par 72 in the state tournament, tied for second low medalist.

Coach of the Year: TONY McCABE, Diamond Bar

In eight years with the program, Diamond Bar High School has advanced to the CIF-SS finals seven times. This season, the Brahmas toppled the mountain, winning the title. And the Brahmas nearly topped the CIF-WSCGA Foundation State tournament, finishing second to Torrey Pines. "What a great season," McCabe said.

First Team

Walnut finished third in the CIF-Southern Section regionals to advance to the CIF-SS finals, where Walnut finished eighth. She also advanced to the CIF-SS individual finals, finishing tied for 21st with a 79. She shot a 73 in the CIF State tournament.

DANIELLE LEE, La Mirada, sophomore: Lee led the Matadores in Suburuban League competiton. She tied for fifth in the CIF-SS individual Northern Regional at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard with a 69. That sent her to the CIF-SS finals at Western Hills Country Club, where she shot an 82. That was three strokes above the cut.

MELISSA LEO, La Canada, junior: Leo proved herself in the CIF-SS individual tournaments. After taking third in the Pacific League, she earned a spot in the CIF-SS Northern Division tournament by shooting a 75 at River Ridge and then shot an 83 in the finals at Western Hills. La Canada finished in third place in league.

MATCH OF THE YEAR: CIF State WSCGA Foundation finals, Nov. 13

The Diamond Bar High School girls golf team tackled one hurdle.

The Brahmas almost overcame a second at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga. After winning their first CIF-Southern Section championship, in the Eastern Division, the Brahmas took second place in the CIF State tournament.

Torrey Pines won by 19 strokes for its third state crown. Mission of San Jose finished 19 strokes behind Diamond Bar.

"We really killed all the other teams in state, but they kelled us,"

Diamond Bar coach Tony McCabe said. "What a great a season."

The Brahmas, who won their first CIF-SS Eastern Division championship this season, graduate just two seniors from a starting six that includes two freshmen and two sophomores.

Sophomores Bethany Wu and senior Kristie Yang, who will play at Southern Illinois next season, both shot 7-over-par 81s on the par-74 course. Wu won the CIF-SS indivitual title.

Kaitleen Shee shot an 83 and Isabelle Shee an 87.
