Diamond Bar and Walnut Business Clubs Bring Home Awards at State Conference
Seven students qualify for national competition

WALNUT, CA—Diamond Bar and Walnut High School business students competed in the State Leadership Conference (SLC) held in Santa Clarita on April 18-21.

Students are members of their school Future Leaders of America (FBLA) clubs and qualified for the prestigious competition during regional Inland Section contest held February 23.

Both high schools brought home numerous awards and seven students also qualified for the national competition: Crystal Chang and Sachin Vernin - DBHS; Jefferey Huang, Hana Haideri, Annie Liu, Howard Chen, and Vivian Huang - WHS.

The State Conference gives students opportunities to network with other schools, compete in various events, attend interactive workshops, and be exposed to the world of business, described Walnut High FBLA President Zachary Woo.

 “I love FBLA especially because of the networking opportunities provided by conferences like the State Leadership Conference. The chance to meet new people and connect with future business leaders from all across the state is a unique opportunity that is not offered by any other organization,” said Bryan Ramirez, Walnut High School FBLA Parliamentarian.

Twenty-four Diamond Bar High Brahmas vied in the SLC conference held at the Hyatt Regency and two qualified for the nationals in June.

Freshmen Crystal Chang finished 2nd in the State in Introduction of Business Communications and qualified for the National Competition in June. 

Junior Sachin Verma finished 2nd in Spreadsheet Applications and also qualified for the National Event. 

Junior Joseph Chou finished 4th in Impromptu Speaking and also placed 8th in a team event - Emerging Business Issues with Junior Daniel Yang and Senior Sara Pak. 

Juniors Joy Chou, Bill Kwai and Claire Huang placed 4th in Business Ethics. 

Junior Kristine Chuang finished 9th in Hospitality Management.

Inland Valley Section Members also selected Junior Nancy Zhou as the Section Secretary for the 2013-2014 School Year, and CA FBLA Members selected Sophomore Greg Gunadi.  Greg will be representing the State of California (FBLA) in the officer team as their secretary. 

“Congratulations to all who attended this year’s State Conference, said said Social Studies Teacher and Club Advisor Ty Watkins.

“And they’re a great group of kids too!" he said.

Walnut High School’s FBLA club also had numerous award winners at the SLC with two students qualifying for the national competition.

“They placed 9th at sweepstakes and brought home an abundance of plaques,” said Business Teacher and Advisor Neil Jacoby.

WHS National qualifiers are 1st place - Jefferey Huang - Business Communication; 3rd place - Hana Haideri - Intro to Business Communication, and 3rd place - Annie Liu, Howard Chen, Vivian Huang - Network Design.

Other Mustang winners include: 3rd place - Alvin Wan, Victor Chen, Zachary Woo – Entrepreneurship; 3rd place - Bryan Ramirez, Michael Hyun, Minesh Patel, Roger Liang - Parliamentary Procedures; 4th place - Hana Haderi - Intro to Parliamentary Procedure; 4th place - Jefferey Huang - Intro to Business Communication; 5th place - Oscar Xia, Steven Chen - Banking and Financial Systems; 5th place - Minesh Patel - Client Service; 6th place - Kevin Chen - Business Math;             6th place - Henry Ao - Word Processing I; 7th place - Nathan Wong - FBLA Principles and Procedures;  7th place - Ashley Soong - Job Interview;  8th place - Danna Chen - FBLA Principles and Procedures;  8th place - Samantha Wu - Intro to Business; 9th place - Johnny Mok - Personal Finance; 10th place - Erica Ma, Lucy Liang - Emerging Business Issues.

State Champion Walnut FBLA member Jefferey Huang won 1st Place in Business Communication and also qualified for the national competition. 

Diamond Bar High’s Crystal Chang won 2nd Place in Business Communication and also qualified for the national competition.

DBHS sophomore Greg Gunadi was elected the FBLA State Secretary. 


DBHS Sachin Verma won 2nd Place in Spreadsheet Application and qualified for the national contest in June.

Advisors Ty Watkins and Neil Jacoby took about 25 kids to San Francisco for an afternoon of sightseeing at Pier 39.  The group also had fun riding a cable car.
