Quail Summit Hosts High Flying Red Ribbon Assembly
DIAMOND BAR, CA--It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s super Principal Dr. Alysia Hobbs-Odipo making a high-flying surprise entrance in a helicopter during the school’s Spirit Day assembly on October 28.
Students gathered on the playground at 8:30 a.m. for the culminating ceremony of the national Red Ribbon Week drug-free campaign and a monthly spirit day assembly to celebrate the Students of the Month.
“We’re about to have a lot of fun because we’re celebrating Red Ribbon Week and being Drug Free - and this is all for you!” said Deputy Rick Wright.
“The most important thing for you is to make good decisions,” Wright said to the children.
He stressed the importance of setting goals, doing their best in school and staying away from drugs.
Wright taught drug prevention at the school for 11 years as a Los Angeles County STAR (Success Through Awareness and Resistance) Deputy.
Within just minutes, a sheriff’s car, police motorcycles and a fire truck roared into the assembly with sirens blaring and lights flashing.
“What person are we missing on this stage?” Wright asked the children.
“Your principal and here she comes now!”
The youngsters were shocked when a green sheriff’s helicopter made a surprise loud and windy landing on the grassy schoolyard.
The students cheered when the door opened and out stepped their principal, Dr. Hobbs!
WVUSD Superintendent Dr. Bob Taylor and local dignitaries including Diamond Bar Mayor Jack Tanaka and Mayor Pro Tem Ron Everett, Diamond Bar-Walnut Sheriff Captain Jeff Scroggin, civilian volunteers, and even the school mascot Quincy the Quail were on hand for the event.
The children gave another cheer when they learned they would be receiving Tootsie Roll Pops from the representative from Chase Bank.
Then each Student of the Month was honored with the wonderful Quail Summit tradition of “a wall of high fives” from all their teachers. And this month it included all the dignitaries and special guests.
Quail Summit hosted Red Ribbon Week activities October 21-25. Each day, students participated in classroom lessons that promoted a personal commitment to living a drug-free life.
Monday’s theme was “I’m Drug Free and students wore as much red as possible: “I’m Drug Free” – students wore as much red as possible. Tuesday’s activity was “Sock it to Drugs” and students wore crazy or mismatched socks. Wednesday’s theme was “Too Bright for Drugs” and students wore sunglasses. Thursday’s sports theme was “Team Up Against Drugs” and students wore team t-shirts. On Friday, “Show Your School Spirit” and students wore Quail Summit t-shirts and went to the school carnival because “We’ve got better things to do than drugs!”
“Our school is a very special place for children, and I appreciate our partnership with the Walnut Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Lonnie Deck and Deputy Clint Hughes were outstanding pilots. The helicopter landing was exciting and memorable for all of our students. What a wonderful way to culminate Red Ribbon Week!“ said Principal Dr. Hobbs.
