Evergreen Students Present Veterans Day Ceremony
DIAMOND BAR, CA--Second grade students at Evergreen Elementary School learned about Veterans Day during a ceremony on Friday, November 8.
"The students did a wonderful job! Our second grade teachers Alice Oldag, Loree Hoff, Erika McQuilliams and Ashley Marshman did a fabulous job of making the Veterans Day Holiday meaningful for our students. The students have a much better understanding of our veterans, the holiday and how we can show appreciation for our country," said Principal Carolyn Wills.
The patriotic program featured the students singing You're a Grand Old Flag, America the Beautiful, and songs from each branch of the Armed Forces – Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. The group of about 100 students and teachers also observed a moment of silence as the Taps bugle solo was played to honor our military heroes.
The national holiday began in 1918, when in 11th hour, on the 11th day, everybody put down their guns and cannons and stopped fighting, and they had peace. It was first called Armistice Day and then several years later was re-named Veterans Day, described teacher Alice Oldag.
The students wrote essays describing how they can show respect for America. Students from each class were chosen to recite their personal essays at the assembly.
“In America we can choose our jobs and work hard to make our dreams come true. I can show respect by not wasting food," said Serena Yang.
“I can show respect for America by obeying all the laws and being a good citizen,” said Morgan Seshiki.
“America is special to me because I can have both chocolate cake and chow mein in one day and because nature is all around,“ said Henry Liang.
“We have brave people to fight for our country. I can show respect for America by throwing my trash away and I will be kind because I love Americans," wrote Jessica Kauss.
"We have the freedom to say what we want as long as we don't say hurtful things," wrote Dashiell Chen.
"As a girl, I can go to any school I want to and I can show respect for America by being really kind to others," wrote Elysia Lopez.
Each class also voted on a student who demonstrates good citizenship daily and those students were honored by being the flag bearers for the ceremony. They were Juliette Liu, Joey Hernandez, Kaitlyn Sands and Bryson Chang.
