Castle Rock First Graders Present Animal Showcase
Lions and tigers and bears – oh my!

DIAMOND BAR, CA—Parents of Castle Rock Elementary first graders visited classrooms for an Animal Showcase on April 17.

The children were eagerly waiting for their arrival with handmade animals perched on every desk including foxes, lions, tigers, dolphins, giraffes, and more.

Each child selected an animal and learned how it has adapted to its environment.

They learned research skills, note taking, and report writing.  They also created a 3D animal art project.

“They’ve learned so much about animals,” said teacher Bonnie Rohm.

Parents listened as the children read their reports and showed off their animals during the 30-minute event.

“Enjoy your morning, it’s a time to celebrate what they are learning,” she added.

Nathan Lees, age 7, chose the cheetah for his research project.

“I like them because they can run super fast!”

“Jaylin Dalal, age 7, proudly displayed his red howler monkey in a jungle made from pompom balls, chenille pipes, and wrapping paper.

“We had to make it at school,” he said.

The six-week Survivors project was part of the IB Sharing the Planet unit of study.

“We talk about animals and how they adapt to their environment,” said teacher Kim Deweese.

Students first learned about animal characteristics.

“What makes a mammal, a bird a bird, and why is a reptile a reptile?” Deweese said.

Then the youngsters inquired about the different way animals adapt to their environment with camouflage, migrating, and hibernating.
