Happy to be Drug Free
Vejar students celebrate Red Ribbon Week
WALNUT, CA--Vejar Elementary is decorated with red helium balloons, Be Drug Free flags, and banners in celebration of Red Ribbon Week.
From October 27-31, the campus will host educational activities and themed days in support of the anti-drug campaign including a crazy hair day, put a cap on drugs day, mixed up socks day, and a costume parade.
On Monday, third grade teacher Giselle Cordova kicked off the morning by her helping students create mixed up hairdos.
Then she took their photos in front of an “I’m happy to be drug free” poster.
The boys and girls were eager to pose and show off their crazy hair.
Faith Dowdle, age 8, sported three crazy ponytails, not something you see everyday.
The fun photos were projected as classmates worked on word searches and drug free pledges.
The children also thought about how drugs could affect them in the future.
They wrote about what kind of job they would like to have and how using drugs could affect them.
“I’m going to be an elementary school teacher. If I took drugs I wouldn’t be able to pay attention on the job. I’m going to be drug free forever,” pledged Sherry Chen.
“When I grow up I want to be an author using a pen name Sam Sockins and write fiction and mysteries,” said Surya Donath, age 7.
Ryan Tsai wrote that he’d like to become a scientist.
“So I can make potions!”
Maryam Qureshi is dreaming of becoming a pediatrician.
“I want to help people and make them feel better,” she explained.
Because doing drugs isn’t cool, the children drew pictures of themselves doing something that is cool!
Chen picked ice-skating. Very cool!
Everhett Cohen thought it would be cool to go on a bungee jump.
“And probably a little scary the first time,” he said.
