Students honored by principals during Benihana lunch
WALNUT, CA—Nine Walnut Valley students were treated to a sizzling reward during Benihana’s Lunch with the Principal on May 12.
Fifth grade honorees were celebrated for achieving their personal best.
Congratulations to Sami-Jo Diaz – Castle Rock, Jasmine Cruz - C.J. Morris, Jason Wang – Collegewood, Daniel Serna – Evergreen, Yilin Chen - Quail Summit, Jenna Fortier-Sauray - Maple Hill, Valerie Landeros – Vejar, Steven Villasana – Walnut Elementary, and Nancy Li – Westhoff.
The 17th annual event was held at the popular City of Industry restaurant.
Skilled chefs entertained audiences as they cooked up shrimp, chicken, and vegetables on hibachi grills during the teppan-style Japanese lunch.
The kids giggled as the clever cooks flipped shrimp tales into their hats and turned stacks of onion rings into smoking volcanoes.
“It was so good I’d do 20 extra math assignments for another bite of shrimp!” exclaimed Evergreen’s Daniel Serna.
Each elementary school was invited to select one hard-working student for making improvement in academics, citizenship, and working well with others.
Principals then took turns bragging about their students.
“Steven (Villasana) has emotional I.Q. and empathy for others,” shared Principal Janet Green from Walnut Elementary.
“Jason (Wang) was picked for his super star ways!” said Joan Perez, principal at Collegewod Elementary.
He recently used documenting-based questioning strategies on a 13 Colonies presentation.
“And he did an amazing job!” Perez said.
“This year, Jasmine became one of our PBIS leaders and is now mentoring our kinders,” said C.J. Morris principal Donna Hunter.
Honorees received certificates, chef's hats, goodie bags, and keepsake photos.
“The Benihana experience is one that I always treasure. It is a time that I can really connect with one of my students,” said Maple Hill Principal Nancy Stingley.
