Walnut, Chaparral Win State Science Olympiad Trophies!

Congratulations to Walnut High School for its best finish ever at the Science Olympiad So Cal state finals, held this year on April 4 at Canyon High School in Anaheim. WHS placed fourth out of 30 competitive teams.

Students medaled in the following events:

3rd place:

Chemistry Lab – Allison Tang and Ayesha Ng

Compound Machines – Jeffery Zhang and Brian Sonner

Green Generation – Sofia Ding and Kelly Huang

Wright Stuff – Ted Zhu and Brian Zeng

4th place:

Bungee Drop – Dalton Trinh and Ted Zhu

Disease Detectives – Maxwell Zhu and Caroline Huang

5th place:

Hydrogeology (trial event) – Lena Trinh and Hannah Hu

6th place:

Bridge Building – Ted Zhu and Dalton Trinh

In order to achieve fourth place overall, the non-medalling team members also scored extremely well.

Tony Goossens, the team’s teacher advisor for the last four years, said, “This year’s competition was by far the most competitive. Our students worked very hard in the 25 scheduled events. These events go beyond what is taught in the classroom, and several topics were not taught at the high school at all, such as entomology, fossils, and hydrogeology. I am proud of the commitment and drive our students had to Science Olympiad and the rigors of their regular courses.”

Chaparral Middle School also earned a 5th place team medal, moving up an impressive 14 spots from last year!

The team is coached by teacher Bob Patterson who shared the top teams said they will be watching out for the Chaparral next year!
