Math Olympiad News: Several students representing Suzanne Middle School competed with 120,000 other students worldwide in the 2014-2014=5 Math Olympiad program. This problem consisted of Math Olympiad contests which challenged students to solve unusual and difficult problems and to think differently and creatively.
The team participated in a series of five monthly contests of 5 problems each, from November to March, and weekly practice sessions with Suzanne math teachers and coaches Amy Erickson and Victor Lu.
The students responded well to the challenge and were recognized for their achievements during an end of the year awards celebration.
Students were awarded trophies for top scores in each grade level as well as pins and patches of recognition. 83 of the Suzanne Mathletes won national awards and certificates for excellence in grades 6-8.
In the 6th grade, Jenny Shen was awarded the 1st Place trophy along with a patch signifying a top 50% score. In the 7th grade, Amber Tsao and Melody Yu tied for the 1st Place trophy and earned silver pins recognizing their top 10% score. In the 8th grade, Derick Tseng was awarded the 1st Place trophy along with a silver pin recognizing his top 10% score.
The silver pin is awarded to those in the 90th to 97th percentiles. In the 7th grade, the silver pin was awarded to Amber Tso and Melody Yu. In the 8th grade, the silver pin was awarded to Derick Tseng, Alice Zhang, Oscar Chou, Ethan Lin, Felianne Teng, and Jordin Wong.
The embroidered patch is awarded to those in the top 50% of all the participants. In addition to the students aforementioned, the embroidered patch was also awarded to Jenny Shen, Charles Cheng, Maxwell Chang, Elsie Lin, Bryan Wang, Reno Guo, Kayla Hao, Jacob Khuu, and Kyle Tseng in the 6th grade. The patch was also given to Jennifer Zhang, Darren Chen, William Lin, Liwen Xia, Clement Chen, Lenick Tan, Tyler Xu, Rongtin Yue, Joseph Xu, Stephen Chu, Andrew Deng, Katherine Lee, Derek Wang, Aluin Leong, Curtis Lin, Justin Tan, Crystal Wu, John Chou, Victoria Chang, and Emmeline Tantry. In the 8th grade, the patch was awarded to Derick Tseng, Alice Zhang, Oscar Chou, Ethan Lin, Felianne Teng, Jordin Wong, Aaron Chang, Sylvester Yue, Jerry Guo, Yi Chien, Ariel Lin, Lawrence Wang, Tiffany Yeh, Philip Leung, Colby Chang, Tiffany Chang, Morgon Ng, and Bingzi Zhang.
AMC 8 Competition News: Suzanne student takes gold at Math Competition
Sixty-five Suzanne Middle School students participated in the challenging AMC 8 math contest during the 2014-2015 school year.
One student, Ethan Lin, earned the gold medal for his school.
The AMC 8 questions covered many different topics, which exceed the normal middle school curriculum.
It is a 40-minute timed competition with 25 multiple-choice questions. The top-ten middle school students will also be taking the AMC 10.
Ethan Lin, grade 8, took home the gold medal with a top score of 23 out of 25. He was also awarded an Honor Roll of Distinction Certificate for scoring in the top 1% in the nation.
Oscar Chou, grade 8, earned the silver medal with a score of 22 out of 25. He also earned an Honor Roll Certificate for scoring in the top 5% in the nation.
Tied for bronze medals were Angela Zhu, Sylvester Yue, and Aaron Chang, all 8th graders.
In addition to bronze medals they earned Honor Roll Certificates recognizing their top 5% placement in the nation.
Joining them with Honor roll Certificates were fellow 8th graders Sheldon Zhu, Colby Chang, Yinglong Lin, Ethan Chang, and Alice Zhang. Honor Roll Certificates were also given to 7th graders Amber Tsao and Liwen Xia.
Jacob Khuu and Jenny Shen were awarded Certificates of Achievement for scores above 15 as sixth graders.

AMC 10 News: 13 Suzanne students lead AMC 10 math competition during the 2014-2015 school year.
The AMC 10 is a 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice exam and contains difficult problems that can be solved with algebra and geometry concepts. It is much more difficult and contains more advanced concepts compared to the AMC 8, as it is a test for 10th graders and lower.
The top three scorers in Suzanne Middle School this year were Derick Tseng, Ethan Lin, and Melody Yu.
Derick Tseng earned the highest score in the school, scoring 100.5 and earning a spot as the top 5% in the nation.
Ethan Lin earned 97.5 and Melody Yu earned 87, obtaining a spot as the top 25% in the nation.
Derick Tseng and Ethan Lin were both were awarded the Young Student Certificate of Achievement for their high marks.
