WALNUT, CA—The Suzanne Middle School MATHCOUNTS Team took 1st place at the East San Gabriel Valley Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition at The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California headquarter in Los Angeles, California on February 13.
The top ranked Suzanne team members are eighth graders Darren Chen, William Lin, Tyler Xu, and Melody Yu. Chen also took the first place individual award and Lin was the second place winner.
Individual eighth grade competitor Clement Chan placed third in the Countdown round. Other individual competitors include Joseph Xu, Liwen Xia, Katherine Lee, Joshua Hsu, and alternates Teddy Gu and Charles Cheng.
“I am extremely proud of the students. They have been working very hard toward this goal for the past several years,” said teacher and MATHCOUNTS coach Amy Erickson.
Students from Walnut High School also volunteer their time to coach the Suzanne mathletes.
“This is truly a team win!” Erickson added. This the first time in the school’s history that students took both team and top individual honors.
The Suzanne MATHCOUNTS team and top two individual winners will advance to the California State Competition at the University of California Irvine on March 12.
