WALNUT, CA--Westhoff Elementary celebrated Read Across America with a book drive to benefit the Maryvale orphanage in Rosemead.
Student council members placed boxes in each hallway for donations of new and gently used books.
In total, the student leaders collected and organized over 250 titles!
“The children at Maryvale will now be able to choose books to keep or borrow, which is exciting as they do not have very many things to call their own,” said 5th grade teacher Kimberley Dalton who leads the group with Kary Penzes and Emmy Hsieh.
The advisors listen to ideas presented by the members and try to find ways to turn them into action.
This service project is just one of several sponsored by the giving group this year.
The student council also collected socks for homeless people and sponsored a note-writing campaign to share appreciation for service men and women.
