DIAMOND BAR, CA—Chaparral Middle School students have stepped up to help the World Tots LA daycare temporarily shut down due to recent vandalism.
During current event studies, the group learned news of extensive damages suffered at the San Pedro center that serves low-income families.
According to reports, the entire preschool was ransacked with over $30,000 in repairs from graffiti, ink toners dumped throughout the facility, broken mirrors, discharged fire extinguishers, and even a small fire.
Perhaps most surprisingly, the alleged vandals were eight school-age children ranging in age from 7 to 11.
“We discussed as a class what we could do,” said social studies teacher Nancy Miles.
After several suggestions, students decided to take up a collection.
In about two weeks, all five of Miles’ 8th grade classes, with over 120 students, brought in donations totaling $533.71.
“The kids gave freely, some even coming back a second time,” she said.
Students also made a “Be Happy” banner that included notes of kindness for the young children and staff members.
The group said they hoped their offering could be used to restore some of the lost materials and a little of their happiness.
“Things will get better! Just know that there are other students out there helping you right now,” said Kevin Lee.
“I simply admire all of you for being incredibly strong through all this. I hope with the support of others, you can rebuild,” said Iris Lee.
“I wish you and your students the best of luck and wonderful new beginning,” added Maya Aragon.
Last Thursday, when Miles delivered the gifts she met several staffers who provided a tour of the damaged campus.
“Kids not much older than your students vandalized our school and now your kids are helping. This shows the goodness of others,” one staff member said.
The following morning, Miles shared a special voicemail message with her students.
“They heard the director say they were all weeping because of their gratitude for the kindness shown.”
“I am so proud of our students!”
