DIAMOND BAR, CA--About 120 Castle Rock Elementary second graders found the best buys in town during the annual Business Day on October 26.
For the past six weeks, the IB students have been inquiring about the role and interdependence of buyers (consumers) and sellers (producers) of goods and services.
Business Day is the culminating activity, giving students the opportunity to make a product, create an advertisement, and then sell their items to other second grade students.
Each child was given $20 in “Castle Rock Cash” to shop and buy products from one another.
As the consumers entered the classrooms for the sales, they scanned the displays of homemade items set up on desks.
The young entrepreneurs showed their creativity offering everything from canvas paintings to fresh-squeezed lemonade and glittered bookmarks.
“Business Day is one of my favorite days of the year! Our second-grade students get a taste of what it’s like to be real consumers and what it takes to produce an item that people want to buy,” said Principal Dr. Resma Byrne.
Classrooms began buzzing with activity once students started making purchases.
“It is a buying frenzy!” Byrne adds. “Student get a real life understanding of the cost of production and what a profit line really looks like. By the end of the day, they are exhausted and but not too exhausted to count their earnings!”
Justin Zhang advertised his $4.00 homemade organic bat-shaped cookies as “delectable” and “fresh.”
Sophia Galaviz presented homemade playdoh in a Halloween-themed pumpkin and spider patch.
“I did a lot of stirring and mixing in the kitchen!” the young entrepreneur said of the fast-selling green and orange mixtures.
Phillip Kim created tiny Christmas ornaments from pine cones and pompoms.
Bella Hoang quickly sold out of the 10 green and blue glitter slime cups she sold at $5.00 each.
“It makes me proud!” she said.
