Giving Thanks

November 7, 2018

By Kelli Gile, WVUSD Office of Community Resources

WALNUT, CA--Vejar Elementary families have rallied to show support for troops serving overseas.

Hundreds of non-perishable items and toiletries including protein bars, gum, hot chocolate, canned meals, ramen soup, toothpaste, and lip balm were donated during a fall military supply drive.

Parents, grandparents, and students gathered Friday evening in the multipurpose room to pack the 100 red and green care packages.

The Vejar volunteers also created holiday cards with special messages for the soldiers.

“Thank you for serving to protect us,” one student penned.

A local resident who learned of the event through social media brought in a bag of supplies.

“We were very touched by the outpouring of love for our troops!” said parent Melissa Hanson, the school’s Community Club president.

The supply drive was organized by Community Club member Helene McDonald and second-grade teacher Giselle Cordova.

“This event truly embodies the family spirit of Vejar,” shared Principal Whitney Prenger.

“We want to thank all the military members that serve our country and do what we can to give back at this special time of year!”

The holiday care packages will be shipped through Operation Gratitude.
