Common Core Standards

Walnut Valley Introduces Common Core Standards

Walnut Valley Unified School District, along with all California districts, has begun building the foundation and implementation process of the Common Core Standards in English language arts and mathematics. Currently, standards for what students should know and are able to do, vary among states, as does the difficulty and accountability of the assessments used. The mission of the Common Core Standards is to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them.

These common set of standards are designed to be robust and relevant to our 21st century, global world, reflecting the knowledge and skills students need for success in postsecondary education and careers. The new standards place more of an emphasis on thinking critically and creatively, articulating positions, taking intellectual risks and collaborating effectively. Common Core standards will facilitate conversation among teachers, parents and students about high level academic learning goals These standards define exactly what students should know, and are able to do, at each grade level.

Adopted in California in August 2010, the K-12 Common Core State Standards were developed through a state led effort to establish consistent and clear education standards for English language arts and mathematics. The initiative was launched by and supported by the Council of Chief State School officers and the National Governors Association. Full implementation of Common Core Standards K-12 will occur over the next two years, with new technology based assessments in spring of 2015.

Walnut Valley’s Transitional Kindergartens, Kindergartens and 1st grades have begun the implementation process with these new standards.
